Me, now in HD

So all my vlogs up to this point have been kinda low quality and that's just because I've been working on a little netbook, all the software I've used that allows me to work in HD has just crashed my laptop either while editing or while compiling. But I finally found something that works, and so the rest of my vlogs should be in HD from this point on! Happy times!

Don't forget there is a link to my channel with all my other episodes on the sidebar

  1. What a coincidence that this vlog is about HD, etc. I'm just now getting serious about doing little videos for my own move to Vietnam.

Question: Do you really need HD for online videos? I mean, they're no more than 720 x 480 anyway, no?

More importantly - am wondering what you're doing for a mic. What camera do you have, and what mic are you using?

Thanks, and - yes the HD and (even better, for some reason) the audio sounds great!

  2. I think you really do need HD, my recording resolution is actually 1280x720. The detail that my vlogs, up until now, have been in is disappointing, you really don't get everything out of your shots if it's in standard 640x480 and as well as a much lower resolution the picture quality is pretty awful. The big difference isn't I think in the size of the picture but the quality and HD offers a much higher picture quality.

The camera I use is a Sony NEX-3 and the mic I use is the one built into the camera. I actually think it has two, a right and left mic. To be honest it isn't ideal. It pics up a lot of background noise, there have been a lot of clips of conversations that I've had to discard because you can't hear the voices over the background noise. Those I've kept in I get feedback saying 'can't you reduce the background noise? I can't hear what's being said!' Really you can only hear it if you hold the mic right next to you.

In one clip I tried to use Audacity to remove some of the background noise but the noise was too over powering and it just didn't work. For better sound I have 2 options, there is a mic attachment available for my camera that sits on top where the flash should be (I never have my flash with me). It's an expensive bit of kid (eighty pounds) but the reviews are positive and the example videos for it seem good, but I would really prefer to try it out in the situations where I'm having problems.
The other option is to record the audio separately. I have a lapel microphone, not sure of the brand, that I know produces a nice sound from back when I did the podcast. But I'd need something to record on and I'd need to be recording both the video and the audio to make sure I got everything.
